Travel tales

Pamela and Peter Rule

Pamela and Peter tell about the holidays they have shared together.

Why do you enjoy travelling?

We enjoy travelling both within Australia and overseas and our passion at the moment is cruising. The great benefits of cruising is that you unpack your suitcase once, enjoy great food and service and you are delivered to very interesting ports of call almost every day of your cruise.

Whatever region of the world we have visited, we have found that the culture of the people, the architecture of the cities and the beauty of the countryside so very different to our experiences in Australia.

Travel is an education in itself.

What are some of the most memorable places you’ve seen?

During a long cruise from San Diego, California to Auckland we travelled along the west coast of Mexico and South America and visited one of the ancient wonders of the world Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas, in Peru. Another fascinating stop was Easter Island where the famous maui statues are found. We visited the mountain quarry where these large statues were carved and it is still a mystery as to how they were moved around the island.

Canada and Alaska is another fascinating region we have visited with its snow capped peaks and amazing scenery and wildlife. The train journey on the Rocky Mountaineer was spectacular and the cruise on the inside passage was another once in a lifetime experience.

The view of the summit of Mount Everest peeking through the clouds on a flight into Kathmandu, Nepal was one of our most memorable experiences.

Do you have a favourite destination?

It would have to be France. The villages and the countryside are beautiful and the food and wine are something to be experienced and every region has something different to offer. Who could pass up a visit to Paris, with the Eiffel Tower, the museums and art galleries and of course the shopping.

Any tips?

Always take out travel insurance. We were visiting the night markets in Singapore (quite a few years ago now) and a fluorescent light fell from one of the stalls and crashed onto my head – not a lot of damage but cuts and bruises and a big headache and a hefty bill from the after hours doctor.

Learn a few basic phrases and greetings in the language of the country you are visiting, we find that the locals are more open to helping the lost Aussies.
